1. Descriptive
 Pg. 20 p. 5

"She was...blue eyes."

This passage is descriptive because it describes Carla Davis, the new counselor in the school. How pretty and unusual she is.

What assumptions could you make about Carla Davis' Rock and Roll shirt?
I think that Carla Davis, the new counselor is still young and wants to be embraced by
the students as someone that they can relate to.

What does the passage add to the story?
This passage adds a character trait and understanding that the new counselor is
much more interesting than most of the other school adults. It adds an outsider that
is trying to make a difference in children's lives and she is not afraid to be herself.

2. Surprising

Pg. 21 p. 10

"I can't...just delightful."

This passage is surprising because the new counselor, Carla Davis, has met the mother of the class bully, Bradley Chalkers. And even though she has heard horror tales and warnings about him, she says that Bradley sounds like a charming and delightful young man!

Do you remember a person in your life that did not make a judgements about you or someone else until you met them, even if unpleasant comments are said by others beforehand?
I remember that my mom would always have to observe that a certain person had a bad quality for herself before making a judgement. It is classy to not make predispositions about someone because they might really be fine and dandy!

Why does the author include this passage to the story?
To show that the counselor is genuine and is someone that the students can trust and relate to because she doesn't judge them.

3. Humorous

Pg.20  p.7

"Bradley's mother...on the table"

This passage is a good example of a humerous passage because it made me laugh when I read it. It describes when Mrs. Chalkers was fumbling with a dolphin puppet and when she went to shake the new councelors hand, the puppet was still on her hand.

How many times do you think that the average person laughs a day? Why should we laugh?
The average 6-year-old laughs about 300 times a day, but our natural sense of good humor quickly gets dampened. By adulthood, we laugh only 15-100 times per day.
We should laugh because laughing 100 times is equivalent to a 10-minute workout on a rowing machine, or to 15 minutes on a stationary exercise bike. The mere act of laughing
exercises the diaphragm, as well as the abdominal, respiratory, facial, leg, and back muscles.

WoW!
What does this passage add to the story?
The purpse of this message is to add humor to the story. The main audience to these books
are children and they laugh at least 300 times a day reasearch shows. Laughter is one of my
favorite things to do, and I don't stand alone, the author wants to excite readers about
what funny event is to happen next.

4. Fantasy

Pg. 9 p. 7

"He was...all friends."

This segment is a good model for a fantasy passage because it is about Bradley and his toy figurines having a conversation. Bradley made up a story with the toy animals and pretended like they could talk.

Did you ever as a child have an imaginary friend or did you give your artificial toys life?
Yes, I thought that all of my stuffed animals were real and I would let them all sleep in the
bed with me because I thought their feelings would get hurt all of the stuffed animals
  weren't included.

Why did the author include this passage in the story?
I think Louis Sachar added this passage to symbolize how lonesome Bradley is. It really shows
that he struggles with finding and keeping friends, he has to make friends with animal
figurines. It really makes me think of how lonesome Bradley is.
