Word Wizard

Whittle

1. Write down the word, the page number, and the paragraph number.

2. Copy the sentence from the book in which the word appears.
    "Welcome especially...of wood."

3. Re-read the sentence in which the word appears.  Think about the word, the sentence, and the story.  Write down what part of speech you think the word is and   then write down what you think the word means.
    I think the part of speech is a verb, and the definition is to make or assemble.

4. Look up the word in the dictionary.  Using the definition and everything you know about the word, write your own definition of the word.
    My definition of whittle is to carve, assemble from wood.

5. Write down an explanation telling how this word adds meaning to the story.  Think about the characters, plot, setting, theme, etc.
    Whittle adds to the story that Mr. Hamp and Welcome were making toys, but not just ordinary toys, toys from wood that were from the heart.

6. Make your word wizard card.  Be sure to include in LARGE PRINT your word and the page and paragraph number.  On the other side of the card draw a picture to represent your word, the word, and the definition of the word.

Sprig

1. Write down the word, the page number, and the paragraph number.

2. Copy the sentence from the book in which the word appears.
    "Behind the...perfect sprig."

3. Re-read the sentence in which the word appears.  Think about the word, the sentence, and the story.  Write down what part of speech you think the word is and then write down what you think the word means.
    I think sprig is a noun and it means a piece of holly.

4. Look up the word in the dictionary.  Using the definition and everything you know about the word, write your own definition of the word.
    A sprig is a dry twig, or a splinter.

5. Write down an explanation telling how this word adds meaning to the story.  Think about the characters, plot, setting, theme, etc.
    Sprig added  to the story more definition of the star it was hiding behind so we could truly picture what it looked like.

6. Make your word wizard card.  Be sure to include in LARGE PRINT your word and the page and paragraph number.  On the other side of the card draw a picture to represent your word, the word, and the definition of the word.

Promotion

1. Write down the word, the page number, and the paragraph number.

2. Copy the sentence from the book in which the word appears.
    "Not only...Christmas Eve!"

3. Re-read the sentence in which the word appears.  Think about the word, the sentence, and the story.  Write down what part of speech you think the word is and then write down what you think the word means.
    I think the word promotion is a noun and that it means a raise or rise in stature.

4. Look up the word in the dictionary.  Using the definition and everything you know about the word, write your own definition of the word.
    Promotion is the act of being raised in position or rank.

5. Write down an explanation telling how this word adds meaning to the story.  Think about the characters, plot, setting, theme, etc.
    It allowed us to understand that Welcome had become the new Superintendent of Maintenance. It told us that he was raised from former student to Janitor.

6. Make your word wizard card.  Be sure to include in LARGE PRINT your word and the page and paragraph number.  On the other side of the card draw a picture to represent your word, the word, and the definition of the word.

Scurrying

1. Write down the word, the page number, and the paragraph number.

2. Copy the sentence from the book in which the word appears.
   "He looked...last-minute shopping."

3. Re-read the sentence in which the word appears.  Think about the word, the sentence, and the story.  Write down what part of speech you think the word is and then write down what you think the word means.
   I think scurrying is a verb and it means to run very fast.

4. Look up the word in the dictionary.  Using the definition and everything you know about the word, write your own definition of the word.
    To move in a quick manner and get their briskly.

5. Write down an explanation telling how this word adds meaning to the story.  Think about the characters, plot, setting, theme, etc.
    This word allows us to know how truly fast the people were running and we could tell that their was something exciting going on that the people were running for.

6. Make your word wizard card.  Be sure to include in LARGE PRINT your word and the page and paragraph number.  On the other side of the card draw a picture to represent your word, the word, and the definition of the word.
