What was Welcome's problem on p. 3? How did Welcome solve his/her problem?

Welcome's problem on p. 3 is that the other children at school are making fun of him for being fat and different. Welcome solved his problem by finding Mr. Hamp and talking about his problem's with him. Mr. Hamp also helped by entertaining Welcome outside of school and allowed Welcome to enter his office at any time when the teasing started.

Why do you think Mr. Hamp tried so hard to get Comfort to believe in Santa Claus?

I think it is because he loved Welcome like he was their own child and Welcome had no family to bring in the holiday cheer with and uphold the tradition of Santa.
