  • Do a unit on Wilson Rawls or Kate DiCamillo
  • Write letters to the authors
  • Create a class book of animal stories that have impacted human lives.
  • Collect local myths, legends, or stories such as the fairy ring, the Old Man of the Mountains, Thor the thunder god, the Littmus Lozenges story, or Miss Franny Block's "Bear in the Library" story.
  • Have students make a Venn Diagram comparison/contrast of Opal and Jay Berry or Rowdy and Winn-Dixie.
  • Students can put on skits that summerize the different books for the other literature circles.
  • Have students make a story map for the sequal to either book or the first chapter for the sequal.  Students should include characters and their traits, the setting, plot, theme, problems, and solutions.
  • Do historical studies on Florida or Oklahoma, the Ozark Mountains, or Cherokee Territories.
