The teacher should provide students with special learning
needs with a taped reading of the book that the rest of the class is
reading (Chronicles of America: COLONIAL TIMES). These students
will also follow along in the book as the class reads together. This allows
students to both visualize and hear the words of the book and the taped
reading allows them the extra time they may need to comprehend the book.
Students with learning disabilities in reading should be given the Literature
Circle jobs that maximize the skills that they have mastered, such as artistic
skills. These jobs include the Illustrator, Word Wizard, and Character
Sketcher.
The Literature Circles Unit will also accommodate the needs
of ESL students. These students will be placed in the Literature
Circle group that is closest to their reading level. ESL students
should also be given the artistic types of jobs, such as Character Sketcher
and Illustrator. They should often be given the job of Word Wizard, to
further the development of their English vocabulary. Both ESL students
and students with learning disabilities in reading should be assisted in
the reading of their books as needed. If necessary, they should be provided
with taped readings of their group's Literature Circle book(s).
