Focus and Review:

Recall the story we are reading called Revolutionary War on Wednesday.

Objectives:

12.1 Identify people, symbols, and events associated with the heritage of the United States, Canada, and Latin America.

Teacher Input:

Today we are going to discuss the Revolutionary War and its role in being a part of United States heritage. Our main focus will be on significant events that took place in the Revolutionary War and how the events make it an important part of America’s heritage. The teacher will show an example of the diagram that the students will be creating in the guided practice.

Guided Practice:

The students will use the facts from the book that they are reading to make a diagram of an event in the Revolutionary War, making sure to tell why it is an important event that is relevant to America’s heritage.  During this activity the students will create a “Describing a Historical Event Diagram” to visually see the, who?, where?, when?, why?, how? And sequence? of the event.  The teacher will show an example of the diagram on the overhead.

Independent Practice:

The students will create a diagram of an event important to their heritage in their life, being sure to answer the six questions about an event.  The teacher will give an example of an event in her life that is important to her heritage and also suggest thinking about holidays such as Thanksgiving, Christmas, Easter, etc.  Have the students share their event and tell why they chose that event and illustrate it.

Closure:

After the diagramming, the students will play a pre-prepared Jeopardy game with 3 categories and 3 questions under each category.  The questions on the game will include people of the Revolutionary War, important dates, and place names.
