Lesson Plan on the Declaration of Independence

- The Journal of William Thomas Emerson, by Barry Denenberg

Focus & Review:
After students have read the book, The Journal of William Thomas Emerson, discuss what life would have been like in Massachusetts before the War.  Review the factors that brought about the revolution.  Introduce the Declaration of Independence.

Objectives:
12.1 Identify people, symbols, and events associated with the heritage of the United States, Canada, and Latin America.

11.3 Evaluate the effects of change on the lives of the people of the United States, Canada, and Latin America.

Teacher Input:
The teacher will tell the students that they will be doing an Internet scavenger hunt.  They will be searching for the answers from the web.  There are specific sites that they may use.

Guided Practice:
The teacher will lead the students to find the answer to the first question. (When and where was the Declaration of Independence created?)

Independent Practice:
1. The students will finish the scavenger hunt.
2. They will then draw a picture of what they think the signing of the Declaration of Independence would look like.
3. Finally, the students will complete a word search that has all of the people who signed the Declaration of Independence.

Closure:
The students will watch a clip from the movie, 1776, which shows the signing of the Declaration of Independence.
