Why is it such a shock that Tom is going to enlist in the Union Army? Because his family lives in the South and they all support the Conferacy.
The author chose this passage it informs the reader of an important event of the story.
I chose this passage because it informs the reader of a very important decision that Tom makes and reveals to his brother.

3. Do you think that there were any other people who were from the South, but fought with the North? Yes, because there were people from both places who agreed that slavery was wrong.
