Special Needs:
Modifications
Literature Circles Unit
on the Dust Bowl
By: Sarah Otvos, Mandy Reid,
and Lori Smale
To modify the lesson to help ESL
students it is possible to:
-
Place the ESL students in a lower level
reading group to allow them to work with easier text to improve vocabulary,
fluency, and reading rate.
-
Read aloud with the class.
-
Provide the ESL students with a taped reading
of the book prior to the lesson. This allows students to both visualize
and hear the words of the book. The taped reading also allows them
the extra time they may need to comprehend the book.
-
Give ESL students Lit. Circle jobs that
they have mastered so that they can experience lots of success before trying
something new and harder.
-
Use anything and everything with pictures
so that the ESL student may see what he/she is trying to understand.
-
Picture sorts, personal picture dictionaries,
and drawing pictures for Word Wizard.
-
Find and use a translation of the book
in the ESL students' own language(s).
-
Find websites that they could use to translate
words.
To modify the lesson to help Special
Learning Needs it is possible to:
-
Have these students pair-up with a partner.
This allows them to not be responsible for the entire job. The students
can work together on it. It is also possible to assign the partners
two jobs, one being a favorite and the other being the assigned job.
-
Assist students with the reading of the
books. Taped readings of the books also help the Special Learners
of the class.
-
Provide movement activities for the whole
class to help keep the LD child focused.
-
Provide lots of structure so that the child
knows the daily schedule and what to expect next.
