For the introduction of this Unit on Native Americans, read the book, A River Ran Wild to the whole class. This picture book tells the true environmental history of the Nashua River from when the Native Americans began to settle all the way through to the present. This story shows the people’s effect on the land and their ability to amend the pollution caused. After reading aloud have the students do an appropriate activity like the ones listed below.
· List some things that the class can do
to reverse the effects of pollution. (plant trees, recycle, buy things
that have less packaging)
· Have the students recycle their own paper.
· Research the effects of traditional and
organic farming.
· Research the Nashua River and how the
people restored it.
· Interview older people in the community
in order to write the environmental history for your community.
