Passage Picker

Your job is to pick out four passages that stand out to you for different reasons. For this section, you should pick one Descriptive, one Surprising, one Informative, and one of your own choosing. For more specific directions, click on Passage Picker.

1. pg 17 par 3
2. "The ship ... in half."
3. I choose this passage because it is descriptive. I can almost hear the ship groaning when I read this passage.
4. What is another metaphor that you could use to describe the ship's sound in the storm? The ship moaned as if something was draining the life out of it.
5. The author's purpose is to describe.

1. pg 8 par 2
2. "We were ... the streets."
3. I choose this passage because it was surprising. I would never have guessed that it was illegal to kill crows in London.
4. Why do you think they hung this man instead of putting him in jail? Because of harder crimes back then or no jail space.
5. The author's purpose is to inform.

1. pg 17 par 1
2. "We near ... terrible storm."
3. I choose this passage because it  is informative. It tells us some of the effects of the storm on the ship. It also helps us know how unpleasant the rest of their trip would be.
4. What are some of the effects? Damp clothing and cabin fever.
5. The author's purpose is to inform.

1. pg 12 par 5 to pg 13 line 9
2. "Here was ... he said."
3. I choose this passage because it is descriptive and informative. It told us a lot about Captain Jones and the voyage to the New World.
4. Do you think the fact that this is the Mayflowers first voyage carrying human cargo will effect the length of traveling time? Yes I think that it will because human cargo may weigh more or less than normal cargo which would slow down or speed up the traveling time.
5. The author's purpose is to inform.
