Passage Picker

Your job is to pick four passages that stand out to you for different reasons. For this section, you may pick one Suspenseful , one Entertaining, and two on your own.

1. pg 48 par 1
2. "There was ... dreamed them."
3. I chose this passage because it was suspenseful. I was in suspense as I waited to see what would happen between the Indian and the "white" men. I was glad that they did not shoot him.
4. Why do you think Captain Standish said not to kill them because we will need them? I think it was because he knew it would start a war and that the "white" men needed all the help that they could get.
5. The author's purpose is to inform the reader.

1. pg 48 par 1
2. "We then ... ship's hold."
3. I chose this passage because it was entertaining. I was entertained because Leister and Dotey got what they wanted, to go exploring, but did not enjoy it. I thought that it reminded us to be careful what we wish for.
4. Were you glad that Dotey and Leister were not enjoying their hike? I was because they shouldn't have gotten to go in the first place but they did get to go so they should have kept their mouths shut and been happy.
5. The author's purpose is to entertain.

Character Sketcher

Your job is to sketch a prominent character from this section. Your sketch must include a picture of the character, three character traits with proof, characters goal, and a problem/solution of that character for that section. For this section, you will sketch Jasper.

Jasper Jonathan Jones

Traits:

1. Caring- (pg 40 par 2) Jasper shows he is caring by helping Mrs. Bradford even though Dotey and Leister are mean to him because of it.
2. Intelligent- (pg 52 par 4) Jasper's master tells him that he is a scholar because he has figured out something that even the Elders don't see.
3. Respectful- (pg 54 par 2) Jasper respects his master by not saying things he is thinking that he knows would be disrespectful.

Goal:
To get set up on the new land.

Problem: To deal with all of the new problems they are facing on land, including the natives.
Solution: To do what his master tells him and to keep his eyes open to problems.

Connector

Your job is to think of ways personal experience connect to events or themes appearing in this section of the book. You need to think of at least three connections on your own.

Here are some suggested ideas to get you started (only use if apply):

pg 47 par 1- the experience of camping and being scared of howls of wolves
pg 46 par 1- the amount of graves connected with diseases that Christopher   Columbus and other explorers brought to the natives
