Section 7: pp. 22-35
Discussion Director
Today your job will be Discussion Director. You will read this section of the book, and choose questions for your group to discuss. The question you select should be interesting and important to the story. Please choose two cause and effect questions, two fact/opinion questions, and one predicting question.
1. What caused the girls to start blaming more and more people?
Answer: Villagers began doubting the girls' story, so they accused
them of witchcraft, as well.
2. Fact or Opinion: The girls of Salem were faking their fits.
Answer: Fact, the girls had made up the whole scheme to hide that they
had been hanging out with Tituba.
3. Do you predict that the Salem witch trial will continue for much
longer?
Answer: No, I think the hype will last a few more weeks, then everyone
will come to their senses and realize how foolish they are acting.
Passage Picker
Your job today will be Passage Picker. You will read this section of the book, and select passages that you find especially interesting, descriptive, important, or surprising. Select four passages to discuss with the class. Be sure to include: page and paragraph number; first two words and last two words of the passage; why you chose this passage; a question about the passage; and what was the author's purpose for this passage ( to describe, inform, entertain, persuade).
1. p.23, para. 2, "While the...but dissemble."
I picked this passage because I was surprised that Mary Warren gave
in so soon.
The author's purpose for this passage was to surprise the reader with
unexpected information.
Question: Describe a surprising event that happened to you recently.
Answer: The other night, I came home from the computer lab, and there
were roses on my dresser! I was very surprised that someone cared enough
to want to brighten my day like that!
2. p.27, para. 2, "Mary herself...to jail."
I picked this passage because I thought it was ironic how Mary was
trying to come clean, but ended up in jail.
The author's purpose for this passage is t inform the reader of what
happened to Mary Warren.
Question: What caused Mary to go to jail.
Answer: She was confused by all the commotion surrounding her, so she
had a fit and they took her to jail.
Word Wizard
Your job today is the Word Wizard. You will read this section of the book. Then you will look up the following words in the section. Find the sentence from the book that contains the word, including the page and paragraph number. Then, find the definition of the word (this book has a glossary at the end). Next, write your own sentence using that word. Put this information on an index card, and draw a picture that describes or explains the word.
1. dissemble
p. 23, para. 2, "Marry said
that the other girls "did but dissemble."
definition: to make
a false show of.
sentence: Often people will
dissemble qualities that they like but do not have themselves.
2. anvil
p. 30, para. 4, "Blacksmiths
deserted their anvils."
definition: a heavy block
of iron o steel with a smooth, flat top on which metals are shaped by hammering.
sentence: The road runner
dropped an anvil on the coyote's head.
Character Sketcher
Your job today is the Character Sketcher. Read this section of the book, and pick an interesting character. On your own, choose three words that describe your character. For each word, you must provide proof that the character is really like that. Next, decide what your character's goals are in this story. Then, find a problem that your character faces. Is this problem resolved, how? Also, draw a picture of your character, being as creative as you wish.
Mary Warren
Honest because she came forward and told the village that the girls
had been lying.
Wrongly accused of joining with the devil because the girls did not
trust her.
Desperate to get out of jail, so she lied and said that the girls had
been telling the truth.
Goal: To stay out of trouble, with the law or the girls of Salem.
Problem: Thinks that the witch prank has gone too far.
Solution: Reports that the girls have all been lying.
Travel Tracer
Today your job will be the travel tracer. You will keep track of the movement of the story. From place to place, and idea to idea. Be prepared to share this information with the rest of your group.
