Section 3
(ch. 6-9)

Discussion Director
Your job is to find five questions from the reading that you can discuss with your group. They should include: one main idea, one sequence, one MCEOG, one cause/effect, and one prediction.

1. (main idea) What was the most important thing that happened in this section? Explain.
Answer: The most important thing that happened was that Kit got in trouble for play-acting with the Bible in the dame school and ran to he meadow to cry. While she was lying there she met Hannah Tupper, the witch who lived near Blackbird Pond, and visited with her in her little house. It was important because the title of the book is The Witch of Blackbird Pond so Kit's meeting Hannah must be an important turning point. I think the story will have a lot to do with their friendship.(p.86, par.7)

2. (sequence) Tell three things that happened in this section in the order they happened in.
Answer: First William Ashby came to call on Kit (p.64-68). Then Kit discovers the meadow with Judith after they weed the onion field (p.72, par.5).  Finally, Kit meets Hannah Tupper the second time she goes to the meadow(p.86, par.7)

3. (MCEOG) Which of the following does not describe Hannah Tupper?
    a. long white hair
    b. wrinkled face
    c.very old
    d. colorless eyes
Answer: a. Hannah Tupper has short-cropped white hair (p.85, par.2).

Passage Picker
Your job is to pick four passages from the reading that you want to discuss with your group. There are various reasons for picking a passage. For this section, pick passages for these four reasons:

1. p.61, par.3
2. "John's voice...a delight."
3. I chose this passage for its figurative language. The author uses personification when she says that John's words "fell with a musical cadence".
4. How is the way John reads the Scripture different from the way Matthew reads it?
5. The author's purpose with this passage is to describe John Holbrook's reading voice.

1. p.86, par.7
2. "Kit wavered...Uncle Matthew's."
3. I chose this passage because it described Hannah as being accepting and confident; it gives the reader a sense of her character.
4. Kit went to Hannah's house on an impulse. Do you think it will get her in trouble as her impulses usually do?
5. The author's purpose with this passage is to describe Hannah Tupper and show the beginning of her friendship with Kit.

Word Wizard
Your job is to pick out at least five special words from this section of the reading. They should be words that you find interesting or are not familiar with. For each word you will need to write the page and paragraph where the word occurrs, the definition of the word, the part of speech, the sentence from the reading containing that word, and one sentence of your own containing the word. Two are done for you. You may also use dismay (p.64, par.3), circumference (p.66, par.1), or bedlam (p.83, par.2).

Character Sketcher
Your job is to choose an intersting character from this section of the reading. You will think of three words that describe that character (character traits) and give the proof with the page and paragraph number. You will then tell one of the character's goals for that section,
or something that the character wants to do. Next, you will find one of your character's problems for the section and the solution or possible solution to that problem. Finally, illustrate the character.

Artful Artist
Your job is to draw some kind of picture related to the reading.  It can be a sketch, cartoon, diagram, flow chart, or stick-figure scene.  You can draw something that's discussed in the reading, or something that the reading reminded you of, or something that shows any feeling you got from the reading.  After you finish your drawing, write a short paragraph about it including who or what you drawing is of, where it takes place, when it is happening, and why you chose to draw what you drew.

I drew a picture of the meadow because it seems like such a powerful place, and it was where Kit found comfort when she was upset in the last part of the reading.  The meadow is beyond the onion field, near Blackbird Pond where Hannah lives. I drew it at sunset because I like to use bright colors for the sky and that is when I think it would be prettiest.
