Launch Activity: Pilgrims/Witch Trials

To begin your Literature Circle Unit, students will explore what they already know about Pilgrims and the Salem Witch Trials and what they want to know. The teacher will provide supporting resources to stimulate class discussion. First, teacher and students will fold paper in thirds and label the columns K, W, L. As the class discusses what they already know about these topics, students will record these facts in the K column. Then, students will record on their papers under the W column what they want to know about witch trials and pilgrim life. These will be written in the form of questions. After W column is filled in, the teacher will show selections from Chaucer's Canterbury Pilgrims. Students can begin filling in the L column with information that answers questions in W column.
