    1. When Abe left to become a flatboat man, what kinds of things did he end up seeing? Why do you think some of these things would be important to him later on in life?
Answer: He saw mossy trees, bales of cotton, foreign-voiced sailors from seagoing ships, women in bright silk dresses, and dark-skinned people being bought and sold at the slave market.  This foreshadows the importance of Abe Lincoln life when he gets older, page 20, paragraph 2.
