This is a fifth grade literature based unit.  We are using the social studies theme "Slavery."
Literature circles are small groups of students who meet daily to read literature on their
instructional reading level, write about what they have read by completing a job, and then
meet to discuss the literature.  We have divided our unit into four groups based on students'
reading levels. The first level is our AG level; they will be reading about the way the slaves
came to the US. Our second level is on-grade, and they will be reading a book about the life
of a young slave boy. The third level is one reading level below grade; they will be reading
about Abe Lincoln. Our last group is two grade levels below and will be reading about
Harriet Tubman.  We will use our books for sixty minutes, everyday for two weeks.
