Passage Picker-
1.  Para.#5, Pg.2, "Only the trees......of morning greeting."  I chose this passage because it was an example of personification, describing the forest as if it was alive and whispering.  What do you think the author was referring to when he described the trees to be whispering?  Answer:  He was referring to the swaying of the trees and their leaves in the quiet of the morning.
2.  Para.#5, Pg.11, "After breakfast.....above our heads."  I chose this passage because it was vivid in describing the morning coolness in the forest, where the trees hid the land from the sun.  After reading this passage, how would you describe the forest?  Answer:  It was cool and peaceful hidden from the sun.
3.  Para.#9, Pg.10, "Big Ma's.......she said."  I chose this passage because I thought it was mysterious that someone had opened Papa's letter and taken the ten dollars from it.  Did Mama think it was important that Papa know that the money was missing?  No, she said he had enough to worry about and not to worry because there were enough garden foods so that they would not go hungry.
4.  Para.#8, Pg.19, "I jumped up.....running to the tree."  I chose this passage because it was a good example of foreshadowing, the x's on the trees meant they were marked to be cut.  What do you think the x's stand for?  They represent the trees to be cut down.
5.  Para.#9, Pg.30, "As the dust.......so young."  I chose this passage because it was mysterious to think maybe somehting may happen to him on his way to find his Papa.  Do you think Stacey will return safely with his Papa?  Yes, they return safely and just in time to save the trees.
