Passage Picker-
1. Para.#5, Pg.2, "Only
the trees......of morning greeting." I chose this passage because
it was an example of personification, describing the forest as if it was
alive and whispering. What do you think the author was referring
to when he described the trees to be whispering? Answer: He
was referring to the swaying of the trees and their leaves in the quiet
of the morning.
2. Para.#5, Pg.11, "After
breakfast.....above our heads." I chose this passage because it was
vivid in describing the morning coolness in the forest, where the trees
hid the land from the sun. After reading this passage, how would
you describe the forest? Answer: It was cool and peaceful hidden
from the sun.
3. Para.#9, Pg.10, "Big
Ma's.......she said." I chose this passage because I thought it was
mysterious that someone had opened Papa's letter and taken the ten dollars
from it. Did Mama think it was important that Papa know that the
money was missing? No, she said he had enough to worry about and
not to worry because there were enough garden foods so that they would
not go hungry.
4. Para.#8, Pg.19, "I
jumped up.....running to the tree." I chose this passage because
it was a good example of foreshadowing, the x's on the trees meant they
were marked to be cut. What do you think the x's stand for?
They represent the trees to be cut down.
5. Para.#9, Pg.30, "As
the dust.......so young." I chose this passage because it was mysterious
to think maybe somehting may happen to him on his way to find his Papa.
Do you think Stacey will return safely with his Papa? Yes, they return
safely and just in time to save the trees.
