"Well, the cooks, they could hardly stand it..."

This is a simile paragraph.  An example of simile is when Carrie says the cooks were banging pots and cursing like an artillery drill.
 

Page 58 Paragraph 2

"I wondered about that.  How come tall folks wasn't more important than short folks..."

This passage is interesting because it shows how unfair it was to make one person more important than another just because of skin color.
