Answer: The hare chose to draw a picture of the witch so that she wouldn't be upset with him for drawing outside of her house.
Why is this passage important?
Answer:  It tells the reader that the animals can be very afraid of the witch,and will do anything to pacify her, so that she will not have an excuse to cast a spell on them.

Is there any reason why you think that the hare is taking up for the witch by telling the hedgehog not to laugh at her?
Answer: The hare told the hedgehog not to make fun of the witch because the hare feels that the witch doesn't intend on being mean whenever she makes fun of them.
Why is this passage important to look at when analyzing the relationship between the witch and the other animals of the forest?
Answer: It shows that the witch isn't always trying to be mean to the other animals in the forest.  Just because they feel threatened by her,  doesn't mean that they should pick on her.
