Uncle Jed’s Barbershop and The Gardener

Literary Study Part 3

·        You now should have an understanding of options for getting students to respond to a book. One option is to write a friendly letter.

·        After reading Sarah Stewart and David Small’s book The Gardener, you are invited to complete the following:

o       Write a letter from a character in The Gardener to a character in Uncle Jed’s Barbershop. Be true to the characters, settings, and stories, and be sure to include the necessary parts of a friendly letter. See the assignment sheet.

o       Develop a writing assignment for The Gardener that you might assign to your students. Include the topic and clear directions.

·        After working with vocabulary for several days and after previewing the vocabulary material on the class web site, you should have an idea about how to structure vocabulary lessons associated with a book.

·        After reading Sarah Stewart and David Small’s book The Gardener, you are invited to complete the following:

o       Develop a list of 5 Tier 2 Words. Develop child-friendly definitions for each word. Choose 1 word to artistically represent, and do so.

o       Plan 2 activities for your students to work with the words. Make necessary material and write clear directions.
