Word Study Assignment

Word study is an important part of your daily reading instruction. This is where much of the detail of phonics and vocabulary development will be addressed. In this course we will emphasize word study instruction and ask you to construct materials that you can use with individual students and small groups of students. (See Word Box.) We will practice instruction using these materials, and the expectation is that in your internship, you will use these materials with children.

There are materials in your packet that you will be asked to read and respond to on your blog.

There is a research article by Ehri (2007) that demonstrates the importance of word study and spelling instruction. You will read this and use the study guide to respond to this article on your blog.

You will construct your word box following the scope and sequence provided. The word cards are in your course packet. Additional word cards can be found in reference materials:

We will practice working with the word box and you will learn about phonics through this process.

The midterm exam will test your instructional knowledge of using the word box for word study.

In the internship, it is expected that you will have an opportunity to teach word study to a student or a small group of students.

The assessment assignment includes measures for word knowledge.
