Text Talk Read Aloud
Assignment
This assignment consists of 4
parts:
(1) Your instructors will model a Text Talk
lesson with Beware of the Bears
and we will discuss the lesson. Then you will read Text Talk: Capturing the
benefits of read-aloud experiences for young children by Beck and McKeown (2001); you will post a response to this reading on your blog. (See class blog for instruction about what to include in the post.)
(2) You will plan a Text Talk lesson for the book Goldilocks and the Three Bears by Marshall (1998). Pattern your lesson after the model and the criteria contained in the Text Talk article and the sample lesson plan in your packet. Make sure you have a summary/extension question at the end. Post this lesson on your blog. Your instructor will grade your lesson, and give you feedback. You may redo the lesson and turn it in again if you are not satisfied with your grade.
Your lesson should contain:
Title, author(s), illustrator(s), date, ISBN #
A short summary of the story
Page #s where you will stop with questions that you will ask or statements that you will make
Remember to focus on the text
ask thoughtful questions
include appropriate vocabulary questions
not too many questions
not all stops need to have questions--statements are allowed
A summary/extension question at the end
(3) Now you are ready to select a
picture book and design your own Text Talk Lesson. Use all that we have
discussed so far as a guide; in addition, look at the sample lessons on the
class Web site http://www.ltl.appstate.edu/reading_resources/text_talk_lessons/Text_Talk_Lessons.htm
Select a good
book for the Text Talk lesson—use the criteria from the article and what
we have discussed. You may not use a book that has already been planned. Run
your book by your instructor so that the book you select can be approved before you begin to plan the lesson; plan the text talk lesson just as you did Goldilocks--these will be turned in.
(4) You will perform your Text Talk lesson in class at a time scheduled. You will turn in your lesson for grading prior to your performance.
It will most likely be the case that in your internship you will be asked to read aloud to a student or a small group of students. You may have the opportunity to read aloud the book in your assigned classroom that you plan for this assignment.
