Bethel School is in the heart of the Blue Ridge Mountains. It is located in a small farming community approximately 20 miles west of Boone. Although this community and school seem far away from the mecca of the media and its effects on children, this perception is false. The children of Bethel School are as strongly influenced by the media and its wiles as children living in a metropolis.
The goal of this project was to research and document the effects of television media on the children of Bethel School. We discovered that these children's imaginations are captured and swayed by the products that are advertised on television as well as the television shows themselves. This is observed by the clothes they wear, the bookbags they carry, and the shoes that don their feet. While you read this product, be aware that consumerism and media determine our children's interests and consequently, their existence.
