Gender Roles
Developmental  Study and Media Survey
4th-5th Grades
Allison Beaman, Anna Edge, & Mandy Reid

This study was conducted in efforts to gain some insight into students' interests and their opinions of the influence that media has in their lives.  The subjects of our study and survey were students from the fourth and fifth grades at Mabel and Beech Mountain Elementary Schools.   Our study of students' interest included their favorite books,  movies,  TV shows,  music, and leisure time activities. We directed the surveys toward the students' opinions of gender roles and how the  media influences their perceptions of gender.  This page is illustrated with examples of some of the various responses that the students gave.  The literal questions that the students were asked in the surveys can  be viewed at the Survey Questions link below.  A summary, compilation of data, and several  examples of student responses can be found at the Responses link.   We referred to the Developmental Study from  Block  436, Fall 2000 to form  connections between the physical, social, and emotional development of fourth and fifth grade students and the survey responses that we gathered. These connections can be accessed at the Developmental Connections link.
