This activity, Modern Fashion and Invention, can be used
for any grades third through fifth. However, for this particular
example, third grade objectives are available. This project combines
writing, information, and computer skills.
The activity will meet objective 2.02, 3.06, 4.02, 4.03,
4.07, 4.09, and 4.10 and Goal 5 of the Language
Arts Curriculum. For the Information
Skills Curriculum objectives 1.05, 2.03, 2.05, 2.06, 3.05, 4.01, 4.03,
4.05, 4.07, 4.09, 4.10, 5.02, and 5.03. Objectives 1.3, 2.1, 2.3,
2.4, and 3.1 will be met of the Computer
Skills Curriculum.
Materials:
* Objects of everyday use such as a light bulb
or a floppy disk
* Objects that are very unusual, so that students
will not know what they are
* Digital camera if available if not a regular
camera can be used and then scan
the pictures into the computer
Directions:
1. Have students choose one object on which to
report.
2. Explain to students that they will be taking
the object and inventing a new
use for it. Tell them
to be creative and not to use the original idea of the
object. It may be easier
for them to choose something they do not know
what it is used for.
3. Have students take a picture of themselves "using"
the new and improved
product. Have students
fix the size of the picture in Photoshop so that it is
the size students want in their
article.
4. The students will then write a newspaper article
on the product. It can be a
review, an introduction of the
product, or how the product can be used.
Provide some newspaper and magazine
articles for the students to read.
(Here
is an example)
5. The students should type up the article with
the picture on the computer
6. Save each article on a disk and print it out
for the students to display.
