This is a great interdisciplinary activity designed to enhance a variety
of lessons in Grade 5. It allows students to be creative while strengthening
their language arts, computer and informational skills. Throughout
the activity, students will be creating a new product from an old, odd
object! They will design a new name and use for this object, then
write a newspaper advertisement for it. You may have students work
in small groups or as an individual, depending on grade level. Students
will work together, and combine their ideas to come up with their brand
new invention that will be availavle on the web! Once complete, you
can host a technology fair to allow students to present their work to their
peers, as well as their parents!
Materials:
Inventor's Object Box
(filled with odd objects)
Digital Cameras
Zip Disks
Paper
Pencils
What To Do:
1. Gather a collection of odd items.
2. Divide the class into small groups and assign each group an object.
3. Have the students create a new use for the object and have them write a newspaper advertisement for their new invention.
4. Grade the project on the following rubric:
Rough Draft: 10 points
Final Draft: 20 points
Web Page: 60 points
Participation: 10 points
Total:
100 points
