Boone, NC
It is official. Add baseball to the
list of activities that technology has affected in the 21st century.
“What is next?” you ask, “An automated pitcher, a robot that doubles
as an umpire, new rules to accommodate bases that move in the field?”
Maybe all of that is yet to come, but for
now, our very own local inventor, Alex Spalding, has designed a baseball
glove for the new millennium. Great-granddaughter of the famous Al
Spalding, one of the first baseball players to wear a glove on the field
in 1876, Dr. Alex Spalding has “always wanted to familiarize the world
with my great grandfather’s legacy to our family.” She has done so
by naming the new glove spALding in his memory.
The aerodynamic titanium design, complete
with a height extender, 3 rubber ball grips, and optional motion sensitive
digital camera is an improvement for a number of reasons. First,
it is the glove to catch any ball: baseball, softball, nerf ball,
or paper ball, water balloon, or paintball. The rubber ball grips
absorb the impact of the ball and hold it in the glove.
The impact is no longer felt in the player’s arm or hand. This reduces
the number of injuries from baseballs. The
spALding
is incredibally strong, acid and corrosion resistant. No more oiling
the old leather glove—here is a glove that even PETA will finally be able
to give its stamp of approval. The spALding is appropriate
for players of every height and the hope is that Dr. Alex Spalding herself
will become a hero for young girls who will, in turn, take up baseball
in unprecedented numbers. The optional camera will take never before
seen angles of baseball from the outfield itself and promises to be a major
selling point for minor and major league players
Local Sports Psychologist, I. M. Smart M.D. confirms, “The game once revered in the United States for pitting one man and his skill against a whole team of other men has, as of late, become a discouraging sport for all those whose only skill is their admirable love of the game. The spALding will change the course of the baseball." Now, that is a homerun in anyone's book!
The patent on the spALding is pending
and the product should be available nationwide by next year. For
