This assignment asks the students to use their imagination and create an invention. They will write a news article about their invention and take pictures using a digital camera to put on a  web page. This activity is designed for a fifth grade classroom.
 
 

The Process:

~Explain to the class they are going to make a invention from the materials provided. This should be a box of "junk" that includes interesting items for them to chose from. For example, an old bicycle wheel or old egg beaters...ANYTHING!
~Have the class get into groups and brainstorm about ways their item can become an invention.
~After they have created an invention, tell them to individually write a short news article about their invention. (There is a detailed example on the example page).
~Have them take pictures with their invention using a digital camera.
Go to the Adobe Photoshop link below for help resizing images
~They will need to save these images onto a floppy disk, then transfer them onto a zip disk.
~It is now time to create a web page.
Go to the Navigator link below to help you create the web page
~The web page should include their newsletter about their invention (along with a picture) and then at least one link that will explain this activity to other students.

~ Have the students e-mail you a quick note about their progress on the web page, after they write the news article.
 

Materials needed:
    Hints for using Netscape Navigator to create web pages.
Hints for using Adobe Photoshop to resize images.
~Box of a variety of "junk" that the children can use to create their invention
~digital camera
~Zip disk to save the pictures
~Equal access to a computer
