Computer Usage Lesson Plan
LeAnne Carroll
November 2000

Grade Level:  2-4 (Can be modified to fit either of these grades.)

Goals and Objectives
1. Teach students appropriate and inappropriate ways to use the computer in the classroom.
        Equal time for each student
        How to prevent copyright infringement
        Discuss permission slip
2. Assess students understanding of appropriate computer usage.
3. Clearly state the consequences of misusing the classroom computer.

Teacher Instruction

It is appropriate and helpful for the students to see examples of appropriate computer usage during this lesson.  Use a projector to show students specifically what you are talking about.  Seeing the examples helps the students better relate what is being discussed.

Discuss with the class specifically what is appropriate computer usage.  This will vary based on grade and school system.  Some ideas to include might be: using the computer only for educational purposes related to classwork, the approved search engines for student use, how to determine if information on  the web is accurate or not, etc.

Have students discuss ways to assure each child receives equal time on the computer.  Suggest a rotation plan, maybe a pocket system with each child’s name on a slip of paper that would be moved to the finished pocket when they complete their time, or a chart used for tracking student computer time.

Discuss the times during the day that students may use the computer.  (It helpful to post these times near the computer center.)

Discuss the media release form that they will take home to their parents.  Stress the importance of returning the permission slip so the teacher will know the parents’ preference and also to make sure students get it home to their parents.

Closure
Show students approved websites and software on the computer they may use.  Make sure students are clear with the expectations and allow plenty of time for them to ask questions for clarification.

State the different times students can use the computers and then provide time for this to happen during the day.

Enjoy your students as they use technology to expand their knowledge!
