Summary of NCCTM Conference

I attended the NCCTM conference on Thursday, October 11, 2001 and Friday, October 12, 2001 in Greensboro, North Carolina. On Thursday, I attended three different sessions throughout the day. Each session was interesting, and I feel like I learned a lot from them. The session that I enjoyed the most was led by both a third and fourth grade teacher from a school in Charlotte. The focus of this session was to emphasize the importance of preparing students for the next grade level. Each of the teachers brought in a couple of their lessons, along with the materials to go along with the lessons. Every person that attended the session got a copy of the lessons, and the teachers went over each lesson in great detail. A lot of creative ideas were shared, and the lessons were great for that age level. When the third grade teacher shared her lessons, the fourth grade teacher followed up by expanding a lesson to go along with what the students should have learned in the third grade. It was great to see the associations among the grades and the importance of the teachers working together and communicating. After I attended my sessions, I worked the NCTM booth. Before I started working the booth, I walked around to see the products that I would be selling. I did not think that we would be selling as much as the other booths because the NCTM booth was not as bright and colorful as the other booths, but to my surprise, quite a few people ventured onto the stage and purchased some of the materials. I enjoyed talking to some of the teachers that came to check out what was on the NCTM stage. Thursday was a long day full of a lot of learning, but it was also a lot of fun. On Friday, I spent most of my time at the conference wandering through the different exhibits. I did not attend any sessions on Friday because I did that all day Thursday, and I ran out of time. So, I used Friday to explore the exhibits. There were a lot of various materials that were available for me to purchase. The exhibits gave me a lot of ideas for when I start to teach, and I even started my book collection. I had a great time on Thursday and Friday, and I learned a lot from the experience. I hope that all of my future conferences will be as beneficial to me as a teacher as this one.
