Computer Software Evaluation

                    COMPUTER SOFTWARE EVALUATION

For my computer software evaluation I chose a program that deals with a difficult mathematical concept for my Portrait of a Learner student.  I chose to do Mighty Math Number Heroes, this piece of software deals with the topics of decimals, graphing, geometry and fractions.  My student and I worked on the fraction portion of this software.  This software was extremely helpful to her learning of fractions.
We started working on this particular piece of software on the recommendation of her classroom teacher, because of her struggles with fractions.  Throughout the first lesson we worked on you could see the frustration that she was experiencing with working with fractions.  As the semester progressed she and I worked on this program almost everyday during their fraction studies.  As a result of this program not only did she become
more comfortable with the use of fractions, but I gained greater confidence in teaching fractions.  This was very important because my classroom teacher divided the class into three groups based on ability levels in the comprehension of fractions.
I was lucky because my portrait student ended up in my group, this allowed me to spend extra time with her working on fractions.  When working within the group I used the program to help the students review for their test on fractions.
When we first began working with this program my portrait students math grades were very poor and her enthusiasm for math was nonexistent.  As the semester progressed and we worked together more and more her interest in math steadily increased along with her math exam grades.  She went from 64% on the fraction pretest to a 95% on her last test that I gave her group.  Her confidence in herself has dramatically increased
as well as feeling proud of herself.    This piece of software has a few very good components that I really liked.  The first is that the student can select the level
they want to begin on and then work their way up through the levels.  This is good because the student does not have to work on things they do not need in order to get to what they need to work on.  The second is that the teacher can keep track of each
students progression and accuracy of responses.  In order to sign on the students must enter their name, the computer then keeps track of what the student has been working on and their progression through the levels.  The last great thing about this
program is that it has great graphics.  The characters are funny and keep the students engaged.  I will definitely use this piece of software again during my student teaching with this class.
