Competency 10.1 :   “Use the computer skills curriculum to identify what students should be able to do.”

Competency 10.5 :   “The N.C. Skills Assessment: Utilize available released items (knowledge an performance) as assessment for computer skills for your appropriate grade level/subject.”

Context

These documents were accessed, discussed, and printed out in the fall of 2001 in Technology in the Classroom class.
Document one is a printout of the North Carolina Computer Technology Skills required for grades Kindergarten through Sixth Grade.  I accessed this information from the North Carolina Department of Public Instruction’s web page.  (http://www.ncdpi.org )  I clicked on the curriculum link and read and printed out the competencies for those grade levels.
Document two is a description of the 8th Grade Computer Technology Skills Test.  I accessed this information from the North Carolina Public School web page.  (http://www.ncpublicschools.org

Impact

I will be licensed to teach grades K-6 in North Carolina and I will incorporate these computer skills into my classroom.  I now realize that there are six strands in computer skills for all public school students in North Carolina.  They are listed below.
Societal Issues
Keyboard Utilization/Word Processing/Desk Top Publishing
Database
Spreadsheet
Telecommunications
Multimedia Presentation

Alignment

The printout of the NC Computer Skills aligns with Competency 10.1 .  As a future NC public school teacher I now know the expected skills and will incorporate these into my classroom.

The printout on the 8th Grade Testing aligns with Competency 10.5 .  In my technology class we discussed assessment and the expectations of the 8th grade test.
