Artifact: Web
sites for Students Whose Primary Language is not English .
Competency
13.3 : Use media and technology to support learning for children
whose primary language is not English.
Context
These sites were accessed and printed in the fall of 2001 during the
Technology in the Classroom class.
Document One is a letter to Mr. and Mrs. Vorez translated from English
to Spanish. This letter was translated using the free translation
web page. (www.freetranslation.com
.) At the web site it gives the user a box to write your text in.
Then the user chooses the language you would like to translate to and the
site translates the text into that language.
Document Two is a printout of a web site translated into Spanish by
the free translation page. (www.freetranslation.com
.) Using the translation site the user types in the web site and
clicks enter. When the site appears the writing will appear in Spanish.
I typed in the dinosaur section of the Discovery Channel web page. (

Impact
In my hometown there is a large Spanish speaking population many of
whom speak little or no English. As a teacher I need to be able to
communicate with all of my parents and enable all of my students the opportunity
to learn. This web site will enable me to communicate with them no
matter what language they speak.
Alignment
These documents adhere to the Technology Competency 13.3
. As a future teacher I will be expected to send home letters to
parents, some of who speak little or no English. This will enable
me to communicate with them even though I myself do not speak any other
language.
