Policy Discussion and Handouts .
Competency
14.1 : Establish classroom policies and procedures that ensure
compliance with copyright law, fair use guidelines, security, and child
protection.
Context
This was created in the fall of 2001 during the Technology in the Classroom
class. These were given as handouts and discussed as a class.
Document One is a link to the North Carolina Public Schools Copyright
in Electronic Environment. (
http://www.dpi.state.nc.us/copyright1.html ) This document is
a guideline of how much material you can use from a source. For example
if you are using music you may only use 10% of the composition but no more
than 30 seconds.
Document Two is a printout of a power point presentation on copyright
laws. It discusses the fair use policy and when it is acceptable
to copy something. We discussed this presentation in class with emphasis
placed on the fair use policy.
Document Three is link on citing electronic resources in APA or MLA
style. (
http://www.farmingdale.edu/CampusPages/ComputingAndLibrary/Library/webcitright.html
)
It describes documentation for Web Pages, newspapers, email, database articles,
and listservs.
Impact
As a teacher I need to adhere to the copyright guidelines and serve
as an example to my students. It is important for me, as the teacher
to also teach these guidelines and require my students to follow them.
If I do not adhere to these guidelines yet I teach them to my students
they will practice what they see and not what they hear.
Alignment
These documents adhere to the Technology Competency 14.1
. The examples in the power point presentation and the literature
in the print out sheets help me to better understand the guidelines and
how to adhere to them as a teacher.
