Artifact:  Technologies for Children with Special Needs.

Competency 13.2 :  Use media and technology to support learning for children with special needs.

Context
This was create during the fall of 2001 in the Technology in the Classroom class.

The first thing that was done was to click on the Accessibility's Options in the Settings folder of the Control Panel.  I then changed the display to high contrast.  This made the font and everything on the screen much larger.  This makes the screen much easier to read for a child who has trouble seeing.  Then I added a trail to the mouse icon enabling a child to follow the mouse with little difficulty.

Document One is a link to the Partnerships in Assistive Technology’s home page.  (www.pat.org .) Assistive Technology is technology that enables students or people with disabilities to better participate in the community and the classroom.  It enables inclusion, access, and availability to the classroom.

Document Two is a link to the Partnerships of Assisted Technology community resources in North Carolina. (www.pat.org/ncat.html )  This list provides the resource topics along with a list of specific resources and where they are located.

Impact
As a teacher I will have special needs children in the classroom.  Some of which will need assistive technologies to be able to participate in the every day classroom.  By having this list of resources I will be able to know what is available and where to get it for my students.

Alignment
These documents adhere to the Technology Competency 13.2 .  The inclusion rate is increasing in the classroom.  As a teacher, I will need to be able to facilitate learning for all of my students.  By having access to this web site with these resources I will able to promote equal opportunity for learning.  By accessing this site, I better understand what assistive technologies are and what is available for us as teachers.
