• Page 15:  Esperanza's Abuelita told her, "Do not be afraid to start over."  Predict how this comment may be important later in the story.
I think this will be important if something bad happens to Esperanza's family and she is forced to begin her life over again.
• Page 22:  How do you think the loss of Esperanza's father will affect her family?
I think the loss of Esperanza's father will affect her family in that her family may loose the vineyards and their money.  If this happens they will have to adapt to being poor.

• Page 17:  Esperanza says one day she wishes to marry Miguel, and her father says that one day she will feel differently about that comment?  Why do you think Esperanza's father believes Esperanza will feel differently about Miguel when she gets older?
I think Esperanza's father said this because he knows that society will train Esperanza to believe that she is better than Miguel.  Society will warp Esperanza's outlook like this because her family is wealthy and Miguel's family is not.
• Page 18:  why do you think that Miguel stopped talking to Esperanza ?
I think Miguel stopped talking to Esperanza because his feelings about her were more than those of a mere friend, and Esperanza hurt his feelings by saying they could never be more than friends due to his social status.

• Pages 7-8:  In the Hispanic culture what is the importance of a girl's 15 birthday?
In the Hispanic culture a girl's 15 birthday symbolizes her coming of age.  Girls are presented on their 15 birthday and are allowed to be courted, dated, marry, and become the head of their households.
