4. This passage is descriptive because it uses wonderful adjectives to describe the atmosphere outside. You can visualize the cool morning air and hear the crickets chirping and the dogs barking.
5. What are some other ways to describe being outdoors in the early morning?
- The sky was still dark and awaited the peaceful sunrise.
6. The author includes this passage to help the reader feel like they are actually with Jack and Annie. Also, leaving early in the morning suggests that Jack and Annie were to excited to wait for the sun to come up.

- It would probably be hot and sticky inside the armor because you would sweat in it.
6. The author includes the passage to add humor and to help visualize how much forty-pounds is.

4. It is informative because it explains what a moat is and why a castle would have a moat.
5. What are some other ways you could protect a castle?
- If you could not build a moat, you could put up a huge wall with spikes at the top to keep out intruders. You could set up an area of wild animals to pass before you enter the castle door.
6. The author includes this passage to give background information so the reader will understand what Jack and Annie are doing when they cross the moat.
