About Me
My name is Susan
Hines. I have recently moved in to the empty nest portion of my life.
I have a son who is a senior at UNC Asheville and a daughter who just
finished up her freshman year at ASU. I am currently an
Exceptional Children’s Program Specialist with Catawba County
Schools. I
graduated from ASU in 1983 with a BS in Special Education and have been
an EC teacher working with exceptional students from Kindergarten to
twelfth grade
for 20 years.
Literacy has become a focus of my job as an educator. Part of my current job is to be an instructional coach for the special education teachers for our literacy programs. I have served in this capacity for three years. During the span of my teaching career, I have taught many students who struggle with reading and literacy and am now in a position to reach students in a different way by assisting teachers in their instruction.
I began teaching with limited knowledge of how to teach reading, of reading development or children's literature. I relied on grabbing materials and trying to pull together information, with some semblance of rhyme and reason for instruction. In the beginning of my career, there were not many materials for special education teachers. You often got discards and “left-overs",… if you knew where to look. I was unprepared to teach reading and language arts to the students who needed the most effective instruction. I knew that I had to become skilled in literacy instruction or do my children a great disservice. I began to seek opportunities to further my knowledge and education. I have participated in numerous trainings over the years to educate myself on reading instruction, development, and literature. This eventually led me to the Masters Program in Reading Education. I have truly enjoyed my classes and easily describe myself as a “reading nerd.”
