About Me

I
teach fourth grade at Lyle
Creek Elementary
School in Conover. I am completing my
seventeenth year of teaching. I taught fourth grade last year as
well, but my personal
preference is kindergarten which I taught for the first fifteen years
of my
career. I have two undergraduate degrees. I graduated in 1991 from the University of North
Carolina
at Chapel Hill with a degree in
Industrial
Relations. I thought I wanted to work in a Human Relations setting. I
moved to Pennsylvania
and lived
there for about a year. I was unable to find employment in this field,
so I
moved back home and began substitute teaching. I decided that I wanted
to go
back to school and get my degree in education. I graduated from
WCU in 1994 with my
degree in Elementary Education. I got a job teaching kindergarten at
Longview
Elementary in Hickory.
While this was a difficult school with many, many needs, I knew I had
made the
right decision. I love teaching.
As a kindergarten teacher, I had the
privilege of watching my students develop as readers. I was
always amazed by this transformation. While I felt very
successful and had many students become successful readers, there
were always those students that I just could not seem to reach.
This is was the motivating factor that led me to the graduate
program. By obtaining my MA in Reading, I will have gained the
knowledge necessary to make me a better teacher of reading. It is
my hope that I will be able to use the knowledge I have gained through
the Master's program to reach all students and ensure that all children
become successful readers.
I am married to Peter, who is also a
teacher. We met at Longview,
where he
teaches second grade. We have one daughter, Kinsey.
