Student Multi-Genre Project

An American Hero

The artifacts above represent a multi-genre project on William Shakespeare assigned during the  course RE 5130: Teaching the Language Arts taught by Ms. Gloria Pubantz.

Context: The multi-genre project was introduced as an alternative to the traditional written or oral report on a specific topic. It could be about a concept, a person, a location, or an event. During this class we were allowed to choose our own topic...something we were really interested in. I chose William Shakespeare. The assignment was to thoroughly research a topic and present the information  using a variety of genres. Instead of the traditional "report" we could choose things like birth certificates, news articles, obituaries, ads, diary entries, poems, posters, billboards, interviews, letters, etc. I chose 6 different genres to represent my research. I bound the genres in a booklet and created a Shakespearean coat of arms and grave stone to add to my presentation. We presented our projects in class. It was an interesting activity and I learned more presenting the information in this way. It forced my to not only research and learn the information, but to assimilate and synthesize the information into new genres. It is important that students learn to research. This format made the research fun and offers an alternative way to demonstrating knowledge of a subject.

After creating our own project, we developed an invitation to students t create a multi-genre project. My student unit was on American Heroes.
