Artifact 2: Research Proposal

Context:  This research proposal was created for partial fulfillment for FDN 5000, Research Methods, a research course required for completion of the Master's Degree in Reading Education at Appalachian State University, under the guidance of Dr. Carol Harding.  In this course, we focused on the major aspects of conducting professional research, including the statistical analysis of data and ways to establish validity in the study.  The creation of this proposal helped me to understand the process of educational research studies, including the analysis of results, and has aided my comprehension of published research in the field.

Alignment:

C. Research

The candidate uses research to examine and improve instructional effectiveness and student achievement.

Rationale:  The completion of this research proposal taught me how to use primary research as a means of looking at student achievement and the factors that affect it. This proposal helped me to understand the role that research plays in the field of education.  Through research, we can provide a sound basis for instruction based on the effectiveness of that instruction as evidenced through research.  This artifact shows my understanding of the research process as it relates to student learning.

E.  Professional Development and Leadership

The candidate engages in continued professional development and provides leadership at the classroom, school, and community levels, and within the profession.

Rationale:  This artifact demonstrates my engagement in continued professional development.  This course and this research proposal deepened my knowledge and understanding of the educational field.  Also, I shared this research proposal with the students in FDN 5000, demonstrating my membership to appropriate professional communities.
