Media Ethnography Power Point Presentation

This project was conducted on a group of elementary school students to see how media influenced their lives.

Context

While working with a group of interns from my school, we wanted to see how television and other forms of media influenced the clothes they wore and other things they brought to school.  Along with three other interns, we observed many students in second and third grades.  After compiling information from our observations, we put our information together in the form of a power point presentation and let our fellow classmates view our findings.  We were able to really capture just how influential media is on students by taking pictures and using them in our presentation.

Impact

There are always articles about how children watch entirely too much television.  I never realized how true that was until I did this project.  So many little kids wear expensive name brand clothes, even though they have no idea what they are and what they stand for, just to fit in or be "cool."  As a teacher, I must be aware of the power of the media and be ready to defend any student who might not be fortunate enough to have the popular clothes and apparel.

Alignment

This project enabled me to fulfill a few INTASC Principle.  I provided learning opportunities that support their intellectual, social and personal development (INTASC 2).  Also, since I understand and use formal informal assessment strategies to evaluate and ensure the continuous intellectual, social and physical development of the learner (INTASC 8).

By examining how media influences students, I am able understand and use formal and informal assessment strategies to evaluate and ensure the        continuous intellectual, social and physical development of the learner (tech comp. IV B).  When I created the power point presentation for my class, I  modeled and taught legal and ethical practice related to technology use (tech. comp. VI A).  Also when using the power point, I promote safe and healthy use of technology resources (tech. comp. VI D).  Many technology competencies were met with this project.
