Overall, the Louis Sachar unit deals with themes and moral lessons that are common in the everyday lives of elementary school children.  Teachers can connect this unit to various curricular areas, one of them being Social Studies.  The content in the social studies curriculum raises issues that deal with living in the community, citizenship (focusing on cooperating with one another), and the treatment of others.
As an extension activity, the class could create a citizenship ABC booklet.  Each student would produce a page using ideas from the books that relate to community, citizenship, and/or the treatment of others.  Each student's idea should correlate with the letter assigned to them.  For example, a student with the letter "F" could draw a fire station and explain its connection to the books.
Modifications can be made for students with special needs by choosing Louis Sachar books that cover a variety of reading levels.  The children that need extra help can be placed in a group in which the members read books by this author at a lower reading level.  The higher level readers would be placed in a group reading more advanced books by this author.
