Launch: Book Box Activity

To introduce the Louis Sachar literature unit, teachers could create a book box containing items that represent major events that occur in the books.   To increase student curiosity and engage students in predicting outcomes of stories, teachers could guide students in developing reasoning behind items that they pick from the box.  For example, we selected the following items that illustrate main ideas and themes from the Louis Sachar unit:

  • a magic rock/crystal
  • kleenex
  • a stuffed dog
  • a model bicycle
  • a toy unicorn
  • assorted animal figurines
  • a government badge/seal
  • a bathroom pass
  • a sample survey
  • crayons
  • a book cover entitled My Parents Didn't Steal an Elephant by Uriah C. Lasso
