Artifact 2: Word Study This artifact was created for RE 5546: Developmental Word Knowledge , under the instruction of Dr. Janet Bloodgood. Developmental Word Knowledge Word Study Action Plan Context: Word study is important to the development of better readers and writers. In Developmental Word Study with Dr. Bloodgood, we extensively studied and practiced methods of teaching spelling. I developed the action plan as partial fulfillment for the course. It outlines an ideal, yet workable plan for my classroom. The use of spelling pre-assessments guided the placement of students into spelling groups within the classroom. A five day plan follows, each day detailing a research based word study strategy. I included word sorts, word hunts, sentence composition, and games all to keep students engaged while gaining the knowledge of spelling patterns on their instructional level. Using a broad range of games and sorts, a classroom of better readers and writers is the goal of this plan.
Alignment:
Standard 1: Foundational Knowledge Candidates have knowledge of the foundations of reading and writing processes and instruction.
Rationale: This action plan demonstrates my knowledge and use of students’ development levels in reading, writing, and spelling; develop instruction to meet the needs within the classroom, and employ relating materials and lessons to meet the needs. The instruction should remain ever changing to address the students’ needs.
Standard 2: Instructional Strategies and Curriculum Materials Candidates use a wide range of instructional practices, approaches, methods, and curriculum materials to support reading and writing instruction.
Rationale: This action plan shows how I adjust instruction to reach students based on their needs. The artifact also a word study program intended to meet the needs of learners from different backgrounds and differing stages of development, from struggling upper grade readers to gifted readers.
Standard 3: Assessment, Diagnosis, and Evaluation Candidates use a variety of assessment tools and practices to plan and evaluate effective reading instruction
Rationale: This action plan explains the multiple assessments I utilize in my classroom as benchmarks and tools for evaluating my students’ progress. Using multiple assessments, both formal and informal, I am able to gage my instruction and broaden knowledge of assessment methods.
