Artifact 6:
Transcript Analysis This artifact is a project conducted in the "Teaching
Reading and Writing to Advanced Learners" class. This class was taught by Mrs.
Pesko. This class was structured to focus on teaching advanced learners,
particularly, middle and high school students better comprehension skills. One
way to improve comprehension is to ask adequate questions and promote a
meaningful discussion.
Context: The idea of the transcript analysis project is to promote self reflection on the type of questioning that a teacher conducts in a classroom either before or after a reading assignment. Ideally, the questioning is not one sided; the teacher should not be the main talker in a discussion. A well conducted discussion should involve all members of the class in a series of questions and responses. It is the teacher's responsibility to conduct and orchestrate the discussion. With the transcript analysis project, a teacher can gather data that can be compared and studied. This can help to improve areas of concern, and enhance techniques already in place in a classroom. The goal is to ensure the gist of the reading is gained and ask questions to activate both prior knowledge and initiate higher order comprehension and thinking skills. Impact: I gained a lot of knowledge and understanding from completing the two transcript analysis projects. Of particular importance, I realized that I asked a lot of questions that were asking for a repeat of specific information from the reading assignment. I found that I needed to spend more time trying to connect questions to prior reading assignments and questions that stimulated students prior knowledge instead of asking questions straight from the reading assignment. After reflection on the second transcript analysis, I learned that being able to redirect a question to another student is more valuable than just answering a question presented by the student. This technique generates discussion between two students and allows the teacher to moderate the discussion. In conclusion, the transcript analysis project enhances the learning environment and clearly invites all students to participate. Alignment: Standard B: Knowledge of Learners: The transcript analysis project of "Teaching Reading and Writing Advanced Learners" class is an excellent tool for improving comprehension. This tool allows a teacher to create a classroom environment conducive to learning and helping students feel appreciated and ultimately more successfully in their academic performance. the individual student's needs. |
