Artifact ThreeReading Assessment & Correction: These artifact contain informal reading assessment practices and remedial reading techniques.

Context:  I compiled these artifacts during RE 5715, Assessment and Correction, under the direction of Dr. Morris.  This course provided me with the knowledge of how to assess and correct certain reading difficulties in children.  Dr. Morris modeled the remedial reading strategies throughout the course of the semester.  After watching and learning the process, I administered the reading assessments to an 8 year old girl in the second grade.  I administered the Word Recognition test to determine where to begin the Oral IRI.  After listening to Carrie read, I was able to see how many words per minute she could read, her fluency rate, how well she could decode, and how well she could construct meaning from the readings.  After giving the IRI, I administered the Schlagal Spelling Inventory.  By looking at the spelling inventory, I could then determine what her strengths and weaknesses.  Carrie was using but confusing when to double consonants and certain knowledge of vowel patterns were not apparent.  From there, I could take all of the information from the word recognition test, the IRI, and the spelling inventory to determine Carrie's instructional reading level.  After administering the assessments, I shared the information with Dr. Morris by completing a student Summary Sheet.
The summary sheet offers parents, educators, and administrators a wealth of information concerning a student's reading abilities.
