Literature Database

The Literature Database is an online overview of children’s literature.  It is used as a helping aid for teachers to provide insight for kids about a what a particular book is about and if it is on the right reading level for that specific child.

Context:

The Literature Database has been an ongoing project that all elementary education majors work on during their senior block.  I contributed to the database by reading twenty children’s books and then evaluate each book online.  The database includes the specific genre of the book, the reading and grade level of the book, a brief summary, and the rating of that book.

Impact:

The Literature Database is a great resource for teachers to use to help their students choose the right book that will suit them the best.  A teacher has a major impact on a child.  He/She needs to make sure that if he/she requests a specific book to a child that it is on the correct reading level for that child and it will not push that child away from reading because he/she got frustrated with the book because it was too difficult.

Alignment:

The Literature Database will definitely benefit me as a teacher in my classroom.  It is a convenient way to find out information on children’s literature.  It will also help me organize my reading groups in my class and allow me to find books quickly (Tech. Comp. V C).  The database will also be beneficial to students’ parents when they are going to the library to find reading books for their children.  They can quickly and easily look on the website to find books that are appropriate for their child to read.  I will also share this website to the other teachers at my school to help them save time looking up books for their class (Tech. Comp. V D).
The Literature Database will help me as a teacher create learning experiences that will be meaningful to my students and who will enjoy children’s literature (INTASC 1).  Having diversity in my classroom and having each child on a different reading level, the literature database will be very beneficial to me when creating different strategies and lessons for each reading level to help my students to enjoy reading.  The literature database will help me adapt to my diverse learners in my classroom (INTASC 3).  As a teacher, I will introduce the literature database to my students and show them how to go through the database and find a book appropriate for them.  Therefore, the students will feel that they can pick out their books alone without the help from someone else (INTASC 6).
