Modern Fashion and Invention

This is a project that allows students to use their imagination in order to create a new use for an object and then have them introduce their new invention through a newspaper article.  Have your students create a web page that will describe their new invention.

Context:

This lesson was created during my block at Appalachian State University in my Media and Technology class.  I used a digital camera to take pictures of my new invention to put on my website.  I placed and cropped my pictures through Adobe Photoshop in order to use them on my web page.  My website contains my own newspaper article that describes my new invention, along with my lesson plan that contains a master, teacher, student, and example page.  I designed this website using Netscape Composer and found the graphics and background designs in yahoo in order to decorate my website.

Impact:

This project will be very useful in the classroom.  This project will allow kids to use their imaginations to create a new invention and will give them experience in using a digital camera, Netscape Composer, and the Internet.  On the web page I have placed my email address and when I have my class do this project, I will ask them to also have their email address on their web pages in order for me to provide them with feedback on their project.

Alignment:

I can plan and manage my students learning throughout this project by using my grading rubric located on the students page of the website (Tech.Comp. II. E).  This grading rubric allows me to evaluate my students in a variety of ways that will make me aware of each student’s strengths and weaknesses using a computer and other technology (digital camera, adobe photoshop)(Tech.Comp.IV C).  This project meets the North Carolina Standard Course of Study for 4th grade in Language Arts: Com.Goals:2,3, Information Skills: Com.Goals: 2,4, and Computer Skills: Com.Goal: 2 (Tech.Comp. III A).  This project supports the learner-centered approach because it allows the students to create their own invention and use their imagination to describe how the product works and how to attract customers to buy his/her product (Tech. Comp. III B).  The product invention project makes students have to think more critically and creatively.  The students have to think about what they want their product to do and ways of advertising and selling the product (Tech. Comp. III C).  As a teacher you need to have ways of assessing the students learning in the subject matter.  On the website I gave my email address and when I do this project with my students I will have them put their email address on their websites in order for me to give them feedback at any time and allow them to ask questions at any time through email (Tech. Comp. IV A).  I made sure to state on my website that there are software programs and ways to change the settings for our students with special needs in order for everyone to be able to participate in the project (Tech. Comp. VI E).  The modern invention project, contains the lesson plan on the teacher page to provide teachers with insight on what to do and how to manage the students if there are not enough computers for each child to use (Tech. Comp. II D).

The Modern Fashion and Invention project was set up for teachers to teach using a variety of instructional strategies that will encourage his/her students to think critically and creatively on their own.(INTASC 4)  This project was introduced in order to give the students the learning opportunity to design their own project that will interest the individual student (INTASC 2).  The students may ask question through email and the teacher can respond to and give feedback to students through email for this project (INTASC 6).  The teacher will formally and informally assess the students through feedback via email and also using the grading rubric located on the student page (INTASC 8).
